What is e-learning?
Learning delivered digitally — courses, assessments and certification through online platforms — for employees, for customers, or as a product you sell.
Training thirty people costs a trainer, a room and a day of lost production. Training three hundred costs ten times that, and training them again next year costs it all over. E-learning breaks that arithmetic by separating the cost of creating a course from the cost of delivering it: the second delivery is nearly free, the three-hundredth is nearly free, and the record of who completed what is produced automatically. In practice the term covers everything from a video library with a quiz to a full learning management system that assigns curricula by role, tracks progress, issues certificates and reminds people before an expiry date. Companies arrive at it from three directions. Some need to prove compliance training happened — safety, data protection, anti-money-laundering — with evidence an auditor accepts. Some need customers or dealers to learn a product without a field visit. And some realise the expertise they give away in sales meetings is a product in its own right, at which point the platform becomes revenue rather than cost. The technology is the easy part; whether anyone finishes the course is the part worth budgeting for.

Why it matters for your business
Training that scales without per-session cost
Course creation is paid once, while delivery to the tenth or the thousandth learner adds almost nothing to the budget.
Proof of completion in one click
Automatic records of who trained on what and when answer auditors, insurers and clients without a search through folders.
Expertise turned into a sellable product
Knowledge previously given away in meetings becomes a course with a price, opening a revenue line with no marginal delivery cost.
Frequently asked questions
Off-the-shelf e-learning platform or custom build?
Buy first. Established platforms cover authoring, enrolment, tracking and certificates at a few euros per learner per month, which no custom build matches on cost. Custom development earns its place when the learning is woven into your own product, when the content is your commercial differentiator, or when integration with your systems and branding is the point rather than a nice-to-have.
What makes an online course get finished rather than abandoned?
Short modules of five to ten minutes, one clear outcome per module, activity in every session rather than passive video, and progress the learner can see. Completion rates also respond to scarcity of choice: a curriculum assigned with a deadline and a manager who asks about it finishes far more often than an open library of excellent material nobody is expected to touch.
How do I protect paid courses from piracy?
Accept that determined copying cannot be stopped and price the things that cannot be copied. Streaming rather than downloads, watermarking with the viewer's name, device limits and login monitoring raise the effort. Live sessions, assessment, certification and community are where the real defence sits, because a copied video file delivers none of them.
