What is Edge Computing?
Processing data at the "edge" — next to the sensors, cameras and machines that produce it — instead of sending everything to the cloud and back.
Physics imposes a tax the cloud cannot dodge: distance. A camera watching a production line generates gigabytes per hour, and the decision "this part is defective, stop the belt" cannot wait for a round trip to a data center hundreds of miles away. Edge computing moves the processing next to where data is born — a device on the factory floor, in the store, or inside the machine itself — and sends only results upward: alerts, statistics, exceptions. Companies reach for it for four recurring reasons: latency (decisions in milliseconds), bandwidth (raw video never has to travel across the internet), autonomy (the shop keeps taking payments when the connection drops) and privacy (footage is analyzed locally, with only anonymous counts transmitted — a direct data-protection argument). Typical projects include visual quality control in manufacturing, anomaly detection on machinery, and customer-flow analytics in retail. The architecture is hybrid by nature: the edge decides fast and locally, while the cloud aggregates, trains the models and holds the big picture — not competitors, but floors of the same building.

Does adopting edge computing mean giving up the cloud?
No — it is division of labor: the edge takes the time- and volume-sensitive work, while the cloud keeps aggregation, history, model training and centralized fleet management. Serious architectures design the two together from day one.
What hardware does edge computing require — is it a big investment?
The spectrum is wide: from industrial mini-computers costing a few hundred euros next to a camera, up to on-site servers. A pilot — visual inspection at one workstation, footfall counting in one store — starts in the hundreds-to-thousands range; costs grow only at scale, where a business case exists anyway.
How is software maintained across dozens of scattered edge devices?
Centrally, like a cloud fleet: devices are managed remotely with over-the-air updates (often via containers), monitoring and the ability to roll back a bad version. Without that fleet management planned from the start, every update becomes a road trip.
