Comparison

Wix or WordPress: renting or owning

On Wix you rent your website; on WordPress you own it — with everything each option implies.

A site built on Wix cannot be moved off Wix. Ever, at any price — that is the clause few people read before investing months of content into a platform costing €10–40 a month. In every other respect Wix does its job honestly: a visual editor where you drag elements with the mouse, hosting and security included, no technical worries. Its limits are an SEO ceiling imposed by a structure you do not control, and features available only inside its own marketplace. WordPress is the philosophical opposite: the software is free, you pay only for your own hosting at 100–400 lei a year, and the site is portable — you archive it and move it to any provider at any time. The price of that freedom is that updates and security become your responsibility, or that of somebody paid for it. The honest verdict: if you are testing an idea or want a minimal presence, Wix is the rational choice; if you are building a long-term digital asset for the company, choose WordPress or a custom site. We work on neither platform, so the comparison below carries no commercial stake for us.

Key takeaways

Where Wix wins

From nothing to a published site over a weekend, without touching code or hosting. For a small practice, a sole trader or an idea worth testing, the €10–40 monthly subscription buys exactly the right thing: an online presence with no headaches.

Where WordPress wins

Real ownership: the files and the database are yours, movable to any provider. Tens of thousands of themes and extensions, an SEO structure controllable down to the last detail, and no ceiling imposed by the platform.

The long-run difference

After three years on Wix you have paid €400–1,400 in rent and own precisely nothing — the content is rewritten from scratch if you leave. On WordPress the same sum covers hosting and maintenance for a site that stays yours and grows with the company.

Where the balance tips

Technical effort: Wix wins outright — there are no updates, no broken plugins, no site compromised through neglect. SEO: WordPress wins for sites competing on hard keywords, because it gives you control over speed, URL structure, structured data and every technical detail Wix decides on your behalf. Costs: roughly equal for the first two years; from the third, Wix rent exceeds the upkeep of a well-tended WordPress.

The decisive criterion remains portability, because it is irreversible: from Wix you can export only blog post text, not the pages, the design or the structure. Companies that grew on Wix and then wanted a serious site paid for a complete rebuild, plus the delicate transition period in search. If there is any chance the site becomes an important customer channel within 3–5 years, choose a foundation you can leave from the start.

Where you need no agency at all — ours included

For a brochure site of four or five pages with no special requirements, you need not pay anyone: a Wix subscription, or WordPress with a free theme installed in one evening following a tutorial, covers the need completely. Any agency asking €1,500 for that is selling you work the platforms already do by themselves.

An agency starts to be worth the money only when requirements appear that platforms do not solve out of the box: a design distinct from competitors, real SEO work in a competitive market, integrations with booking or invoicing systems, or a site that must load in under a second for paid campaigns. Until then, save the money and put it into good content — content moves the needle more than the platform does.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really impossible to move a Wix site to another provider?

It is — the code Wix generates runs exclusively on their servers and there is no site export function. The only recoverable material is blog article text through a limited export; pages, design and SEO settings are rebuilt manually from scratch on the new platform.

Is it true that Wix is weak at SEO?

For moderate local competition, Wix is sufficient — its pages index normally. The ceiling shows in competitive markets: you cannot finely control loading speed, the generated code is bulky, and some advanced technical optimisations are simply not accessible.

Can I manage WordPress without technical knowledge?

For publishing content, yes: the current editor is comparable to Wix in ease of use. The difference appears in upkeep — theme and extension updates, backups, security. Either you set aside 2–3 hours a month to learn, or you pay an indicative €30–100 a month to somebody who does it for you.

Is there a third option — neither Wix nor WordPress?

Yes: a static or custom site, written on modern code with no platform underneath. It makes sense when speed and security are critical or when the site is part of a bigger product. It costs an indicative €1,500 upward and needs developers for any change — not for people who edit frequently themselves.
