What is WordPress?

The platform running more than forty per cent of the internet: the content management system that became the default, with all the folklore attached.

More than four in ten websites on earth run on it, from personal blogs to major publications and serious shops, and the dominance has reasons that translate directly into a company’s interest. It is open source and free, so you pay for hosting and for work rather than for licences. It has the supreme ecosystem, with tens of thousands of themes and plugins covering almost any standard need off the shelf: a shop, bookings, multilingual content, search tooling. Administration is accessible to non-specialists, so your own team publishes and edits without a developer, which is the entire point of a content management system. And the underrated strategic argument is supplier independence: every local market is full of people who work with it, so the site is not a hostage of the agency that built it, and moving between hosts and teams is routine rather than a project. The negative folklore — insecure, slow, amateurish — deserves dismantling precisely, because each accusation actually describes poor use rather than the platform itself: abandoned sites with unpatched plugins get broken into, heavyweight themes on the cheapest hosting are slow, and a low barrier to entry does not cap the quality of what gets built above it.

Why it matters for your business

Complete editorial autonomy

Your team publishes, edits and extends content without a developer, so the site moves at the pace of the business rather than at the pace of intervention invoices.

Standard needs solved off the shelf

Shop, bookings, multilingual content and search tooling arrive from a mature ecosystem within hours, where custom development would cost entire sprints.

No forced marriage

Being the market standard means any competent team can take the site over, so dissatisfaction means changing supplier rather than rebuilding your online presence.

Frequently asked questions

WordPress or a hosted site builder for a company website?

Different compromises. Closed builders are simpler to start with and carry no maintenance worries, but they charge permanent rent, cap customisation and, decisively, offer no portability, since the site never leaves the platform. This one requires maintenance, or a contract covering it, but stays yours, limited by nobody else’s ceiling and transferable to anyone. For testing an idea a builder is honest; for a company’s long-term presence, ownership and freedom beat the comfortable subscription.

What does a properly built site cost, and why is the price range so wide?

Because the platform name describes the engine, not the product. At the bottom you receive a purchased theme filled with your content, legitimate as a start with its limits in plain view. In the middle you get design adapted to the brand, structure planned around conversion, performance and technical search work done properly, plus training. At the top, fully custom design, dedicated functionality and integrations. The real difference between tiers is invisible at a demonstration — mobile speed, build cleanliness, security — and verifiable at handover with free tests.

Our site was hacked — was that inevitable?

Almost certainly not. The statistics are dominated by three avoidable causes: plugins and themes left unpatched with published vulnerabilities that automated scanners hunt continuously, weak passwords with no second factor on the administration panel, and pirated themes or plugins frequently shipped with a back door included. The recipe afterwards is professional cleaning rather than deleting what is visible, since back doors survive, followed by the hygiene that was missing: monthly updates, two-factor authentication, tested external backups, fewer plugins, monitoring.
