What is a data center?

The fortress building where servers physically live: redundant power, industrial cooling and logged access control — the concrete place where the cloud actually sits.

Walk into one and the noise hits first: rows of racks behind steel mesh, cold air pushed up through perforated floor tiles, cooling units that never stop. A data center is a building engineered to run computers without interruption — two independent grid feeds, diesel generators, battery banks covering the seconds between them, fire suppression that will not drown the hardware, and entry control where every badge swipe is recorded. Whenever a supplier says your system runs in the cloud, this is where it physically ends up: a rented rack, a locked cage, or a virtual slice of someone else's machine inside a facility like that. Three things make this a commercial question rather than a technical curiosity. Jurisdiction decides which authorities can compel access to your records and how comfortable your European customers will be signing with you. Engineering decides whether a heatwave or a substation failure becomes your outage. The contract decides how quickly you can walk away with your data intact. Ask any vendor which facility, which country, and what happens to the machines the day you stop paying.

Does the country hosting my data center matter under GDPR?

It matters a great deal. Keeping personal data inside the EU or EEA removes the transfer paperwork entirely; hosting outside it means standard contractual clauses and a documented transfer assessment. Romanian and other EU facilities let an international client tick that box in one line, which is one practical reason nearshoring here is administratively cheap.

What does a data center Tier rating actually mean?

Tier I to IV is an engineering classification of redundancy. Tier II tolerates a failed component, Tier III lets technicians service any part without switching customers off, Tier IV survives a full path failure. Higher tiers cost more per rack, so pick the level your revenue loss per hour justifies rather than the highest badge on offer.

Should we move the server out of our office into a data center?

If the machine matters to daily trading, yes — an office cupboard has one power feed, no generator, domestic cooling and a door anyone can open. The usual sequence is colocation first, then a managed provider, then cloud once the application has been prepared for it. What decides the order is how much rewriting the application needs, not the hardware.
