What is a Dashboard?

The cockpit of the business: vital indicators — sales, collections, stock — on one screen, refreshed automatically.

You drive a car by glancing at the instrument panel, not by requesting a monthly report about last month's speed. A dashboard brings the same principle into a company: one screen with the vital signs of the business — daily sales, receipts and overdue invoices, margin by product, orders in progress, critical stock — fed automatically from existing systems and updated continuously. The difference from classic reporting is not cosmetic; it is a difference of time and effort. A report is assembled by hand and describes the previous month's past; a dashboard is built once and describes the present, every morning, with nobody copying cells. For a managing director the practical effect is moving from driving by ear to driving with instruments: a margin slide shows on day three rather than in next quarter's review, and the big customer quietly slowing orders becomes visible while the account can still be saved. Two traps swallow most first attempts. The Christmas-tree screen — forty charts nobody looks at — where the cure is five to seven figures with alarm thresholds. And dirty source data, which turns a handsome cockpit into a convincing liar; the credibility of every pixel depends on the plumbing underneath it.

Why it matters for your business

The present, not archaeology

Indicators refresh automatically, daily or in real time — problems appear while they can still be corrected cheaply.

Reporting hours abolished

The monthly labour of gathering figures from three systems and five spreadsheets disappears — done once, at build time.

A team aligned on one reality

Everyone sees identical numbers produced by one calculation — meetings start from shared facts, not competing versions.

Frequently asked questions

Which indicators belong on a company's first dashboard?

Few and vital: sales against target, receipts and overdue invoices, gross margin, orders in progress, and one or two specific to your business — occupancy, average basket, return rate. The rule: a number that changes no decision has no place on the cockpit.

What tools build a dashboard without large costs?

Looker Studio (free), Metabase (open source) or Power BI (often already included with Microsoft 365) cover a smaller company's needs; the real cost is clean connection to the data sources — ERP, invoicing, bank — where an experienced implementer earns their fee.

Our data lives in different programs — can it reach one screen?

Yes, that is exactly the trade of BI tooling: connecting to multiple sources through APIs or automated exports and crossing the data. If some software supplier offers no export route at all, you have just learned something important about them.
