What is a Data Warehouse?
The company's central data store: information from every system, gathered, cleaned and organised specifically for analysis.
Reports that need data from three systems always hit the same wall: the ERP says one thing, the e-commerce platform another, the sales spreadsheet a third — the same entities, defined differently, in databases that have never met. A data warehouse is the structural fix: a central store into which data from all sources is copied on schedule, cleaned (two spellings of the same client merge into one), aligned to shared definitions, and organised for analytical questions — full history preserved, years of records queryable in seconds. It is the foundation on which BI and dashboards stand solidly; without it, every report performs its own private clean-up and the numbers never reconcile. There is also an operational courtesy built in: heavy analytical queries run against the warehouse, not against the live database under the ERP, so invoicing does not slow when finance pulls five years of figures. The good news for smaller companies is that what once required servers and a year-long programme is now a cloud service billed on consumption — BigQuery, Snowflake and their relatives — where a modest warehouse begins at monthly costs measured in tens of euros. The real investment remains intellectual: agreeing common definitions of the indicators and keeping the feeds disciplined.

Why it matters for your business
A single numeric truth
Sales, customers and stock carry one definition and one source — reports stop contradicting each other between departments.
History that never disappears
Operational systems overwrite and archive; the warehouse keeps snapshots over time — five-year analysis becomes possible and fast.
Analysis that spares operations
Heavy reports run on the warehouse, not on the ERP's live database — invoicing does not slow when finance pulls the figures.
Frequently asked questions
We have an ERP with reports — why would we need a warehouse?
When questions cross the ERP's borders: sales joined with marketing and receipts, multi-year history, single definitions spanning several systems. If the company's whole life truly sits in one system, you can wait; at the first serious data integration, the warehouse becomes the foundation.
How does a data warehouse differ from a data lake?
The warehouse stores cleaned, structured, analysis-ready data — filtered water; the lake stores everything raw in original formats — useful at large volumes and for unstructured data, but demanding processing at each use. Smaller companies almost always need the warehouse, rarely the lake.
How long does building one take for a mid-sized firm?
A first useful version — two or three sources connected, principal indicators defined, one dashboard on top — typically ships in four to eight weeks. The healthy approach is incremental: start from the most valuable business questions, not from 'all the company's data' at once.
