How much does a web domain cost?
The smallest invoice in your web project hides the most frequent ownership mistakes.
Romanian .ro domains are registered through registrars accredited by ROTLD, the official registry, and since 2018 they are paid annually — an indicative 40–70 lei a year depending on the registrar. A .com costs €10–15 a year, newer TLDs such as .io or .ai reach €30–100 a year, and premium domains — short names or sought-after keywords — sell for anything from a few hundred to tens of thousands of euros. The sums look trivial next to the rest of a web project, yet this is exactly where expensive mistakes happen: promotions at €1 in the first year followed by renewals at €40–50, whois privacy billed separately even though many TLDs include it free, and the worst of them all — the domain registered in the name of the agency that built your site rather than in your company's name. That last one can leave you without the web address you spent years marketing.

The traps at registration and renewal
The classic trap is the asymmetry between the first year and the rest: offers at €0.99 to register, then renewal at €35–50 a year. Comparing registrars is always done on the renewal price, never on the promotion. Check the cost of transferring to another registrar too, and whether whois privacy (hiding your personal details from the public database) is included free, as it now is with more and more providers, or billed separately at €5–10 a year.
The serious trap is ownership. Check right now, in the whois database or at ROTLD for .ro, whose name your domain is registered in: if the holder is the agency that built your site, your web address legally belongs to them, and in a commercial dispute you can lose years of SEO and printed materials along with a domain you do not control. The rule without exceptions: the domain is registered to your company, paid with the company card, with the access credentials in your hands — the agency receives technical delegation, not title.

What happens if I forget to renew the domain?
The site and the email on that domain stop at expiry. A grace period follows in which you can renew at the normal price, then a redemption period with far higher fees, and finally the domain is released publicly — where sniping bots automatically buy domains with history and traffic. Set automatic renewal and keep a valid card on file; it is the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
Is it worth buying several extensions for the same name?
For an ordinary company, .ro plus .com are enough — you take both for under 150 lei a year in total and redirect them to the primary one, so no competitor or squatter takes them. Buying ten extensions preventively is spending without return for an SME; that only makes sense for large brands with a protection budget.
How do I judge whether a premium domain is worth the price asked?
Treat it as a marketing investment rather than a technical purchase: does the name attract monthly direct searches, is it shorter and more memorable than the free alternatives, does it save you advertising budget? Ask for the domain's history (web archives, penalties) before paying and use an escrow service for the transaction — never a direct bank transfer to a stranger.
Can I register a .ro domain as an individual?
Yes, ROTLD allows registration by individuals too. For a business, though, register it to the company from the start: you avoid the complications of a later transfer and clarify ownership towards partners or investors. Complete and correct holder details matter — in a dispute they are the proof that the domain is yours.
