What is usability?
The concrete measure of easy to use: how quickly people learn, how efficiently they work and how rarely they go wrong in your product.
Usability is not the question of whether the design is liked. It is the measurable core of the whole experience conversation, assessed against established criteria. How easily a new person learns the product, meaning whether a first-time visitor grasps the offer and finds the route within seconds. How efficiently they work once they have learnt it, counted in steps and time for frequent tasks, which matters most in the applications employees use all day. How easily they remember on returning. How rarely they make mistakes, and how gently the system treats those mistakes, with errors prevented by design and messages that say what happened and how to repair it rather than showing a number. And how satisfying the whole thing feels. The central instrument of the discipline surprises everybody the first time they use it: the usability test, in which five people from the real audience are given concrete tasks and observed in silence — where they hesitate, what they cannot find, what they understood differently from what you assumed. Five users uncover most of the serious problems, a session costs an afternoon, and the output is a concrete list of repairs ranked by impact.

Why it matters for your business
Real problems discovered cheaply
A test with five users produces, in a single afternoon, the list of obstacles that have been driving customers away for months — the best information-to-cost ratio in digital work.
Frequent tasks optimised to the second
Steps removed from daily operations multiply with every use, which makes usability pure productivity in internal applications people open dozens of times a day.
Errors prevented rather than merely handled
Design that makes a mistake hard to commit — confirmation on destructive actions, timely validation, clear messages — cuts both frustration and its support costs.
Frequently asked questions
How do we actually run a usability test for a company website?
Simply and without a laboratory. Recruit five people from the target audience — existing customers or acquaintances who fit the profile, never colleagues who already know the product. Give them four or five real tasks phrased as goals rather than instructions, ask them to think aloud, then stay quiet: do not guide and do not defend the product. Note every hesitation and failure. Remote works just as well over a video call with a shared screen, so one day of organising buys a prioritised list of repairs.
Usability and accessibility — what is the difference and which do we need?
Usability optimises the experience of the typical user: easy, fast, unfrustrating. Accessibility guarantees that use is possible for everybody, including people with visual, hearing or mobility impairments, and it carries European legal obligations for a growing list of site categories. Neither substitutes for the other, since a usable site can be inaccessible and the reverse holds too. In practice they are worked together, and many accessibility improvements raise usability for everyone.
Our product launched years ago — is usability testing still worth it?
All the more so. A live product has data, since analytics shows where flows are abandoned while testing explains why, and it has real users who are easy to recruit. Repairs on a product with existing traffic also show measurable effect immediately, with recovered conversion visible the following month. A healthy rhythm is one test at every major change plus an annual pass over the main flows, because products, audiences and expectations all drift.
