What is page load speed?

The time until a page becomes visible and usable — the silent variable that removes or rescues whole percentage points of conversion.

Online patience is measured in a handful of unforgiving seconds. Studies from the large platforms converge on the same conclusion: every additional second of loading removes measurable percentages of conversion, and a share of visitors abandon before the page has appeared at all. On mobile, where most traffic now lives and where connection quality varies, the effect amplifies. Speed is therefore not a technical vanity but a commercial variable, and one penalised twice over: by people, who leave, and by search engines, which measure it on your real visitors and use it in ranking. The usual culprits on company websites, in order of frequency: unoptimised images, where photographs of several megabytes are displayed at thumbnail size, the most common offender and also the cheapest to fix; an avalanche of third-party scripts, each individually small and collectively suffocating; weak hosting, where a slow-responding server taxes every single page; heavy themes and page builders shipping their own ballast; and the absence of caching and a distribution network, which are free or nearly so. Repair follows the shape of any serious diagnosis: measure first on the pages that matter, fix in order of impact, then hold the threshold as a permanent requirement, because speed degrades naturally through accumulation.

Why it matters for your business

Conversions rescued second by second

Every speed improvement shows up proportionally in completed baskets and submitted forms: the same visitors, more customers, with no extra marketing spend.

Rankings supported

Good field measurements taken from your real users are a direct ranking signal, which makes speed technical optimisation with a compounding effect over time.

Cheap repairs, large effect

The bulk of the problem usually sits in images and scripts, so the work takes days rather than a rebuild and produces the most visible jump in any technical audit.

Frequently asked questions

What speed score is good enough for a company website?

The practical reference is green field measurements taken from real users against the published thresholds for loading, interactivity and layout stability, which are the ones the search engine itself treats as a good experience. Laboratory scores out of a hundred are a diagnostic compass rather than a target, and chasing the final points beyond green produces diminishing returns. Prioritise correctly: the key commercial pages on mobile first, because that is where the money is actually lost.

The site was fast at launch and has become slow — what happened?

Accumulation. Plugins added over time, marketing tags installed temporarily and never removed, images uploaded unoptimised by editors, a database swelling quietly in the background. Degradation is the default state of any living site without discipline. The treatment is a periodic audit with a clean-up — pointless scripts and plugins removed, images reoptimised, caching verified — plus the preventive rule that every addition passes a test asking what it costs in milliseconds and who approved it.

Is more expensive hosting worth it for speed, or do optimisations solve it?

In the correct order: optimisations first, since images, scripts, caching and a distribution network are free or cheap and carry the largest effect. Hosting becomes the visible bottleneck only once the rest is clean, and if server response time stays high on an optimised site, upgrading or migrating to a serious provider is worth the modest monthly difference. The reverse holds equally: premium hosting never rescues a site serving eight-megabyte photographs.
