What are UTM parameters?

The tracking tags in links: small additions to an address that tell your analytics which campaign, channel and message brought each visitor.

Without tracking tags, a traffic report is a polite fog. Social, direct, referral — from where exactly, from which campaign, from which post or newsletter, nobody knows, and the marketing budget gets divided on impressions instead of on evidence. UTM parameters are the old, free, universal answer: tags appended to the links you distribute, read by analytics tools so that every visit and, crucially, every conversion is attributed to its real source. Five standard tags exist, each with its own discipline. Source says where the visitor came from, medium says what kind of channel it was, campaign names the campaign, while the optional content tag distinguishes which advert or button and the term tag records the keyword in paid search. Three rules separate measurement from chaos, and everybody learns them the hard way through broken reports. A written convention, because the same channel spelled three different ways becomes three sources. Complete coverage, because anything untagged falls into the direct bucket that hides the truth. And one boundary: tags belong on links pointing at your site from outside, never on internal links between your own pages, which is the classic mistake that rewrites a visitor’s real source halfway through their session.

Why it matters for your business

Every marketing euro attributed

Conversions tied to their real source show plainly which channel brings customers and which merely spends, so budgets move on evidence rather than on advocacy.

Messages compared on data

Tagging variants shows which advert, which button and which subject line persuaded people, taking creative optimisation out of the realm of personal taste.

Free, universal, immediate

No cost and no new tool, only the discipline of tagging; it works with any analytics platform and can be introduced this afternoon without a project.

Frequently asked questions

How do we build tagged links in practice without making mistakes?

With a shared campaign sheet holding columns for the address, source, medium, campaign and content, plus a formula assembling the final link, or with one of the free link builders. Add a one-page conventions document: lower case, hyphens instead of spaces, standard channel names. The tool matters far less than team consistency, because everybody building links in the same place under the same rules is what stops one source fragmenting into five names.

Why do we have so much direct traffic — is everyone really typing our address?

No. Direct is the bucket of the unknown: visits arriving without source information land there, including untagged links opened from messaging apps, email clients, PDF documents and some mobile applications. The more disciplined the tagging of everything you actively distribute, the more that bucket empties into real sources, and what remains approaches its true meaning of people who already know you. Heavy direct traffic at a site with no fame is almost always unmeasured marketing.

Do tracking tags have privacy or search implications?

Two pieces of hygiene. On privacy, the tags describe the campaign and never the person, so no personal data belongs inside them, and site analytics operates under cookie consent in any case. On tidiness, publicly shared addresses carrying parameters can be indexed as duplicates, and the standard remedy is a correct canonical tag on the pages, which decent platforms apply by default. Both are ten-minute configuration details to settle once rather than manage every month.
