What is marketing automation?

Marketing automation means using software to send personalised messages automatically, triggered by each customer’s own behaviour.

A new customer receives a welcome email, three days later a genuinely useful guide, and the moment they abandon a shopping basket, a reminder naming the exact products left behind — while nobody on your team pressed a single button. That is marketing automation: communication scenarios designed once, then executed by software for every customer individually, triggered by what each of them actually did (subscribed, visited the pricing page, stopped opening anything for a month). The difference from classic newsletter sending is fundamental. You no longer push the same message to everybody on a Tuesday morning; you send the right message to each person at the moment it matters to them. For a small or mid-sized company that is the equivalent of a marketing colleague who works around the clock and never forgets a follow-up — quote requests get an immediate acknowledgement, dormant customers are pulled back with reactivation offers, and the sales lost to “I meant to get back to him” simply stop happening. The system becomes genuinely powerful once it is wired into the CRM, where every reaction to every message is added to the customer’s history and turns into something a salesperson can act on tomorrow morning.

Why it matters for your business

No customer left behind

Follow-ups, reminders and reactivations run automatically for every contact — deals stop dying from a shortage of time or memory.

Relevant messages, measurable results

Behaviour-triggered communication produces open and conversion rates several times higher than newsletters blasted to everybody at once.

Big-team marketing with a small team

Scenarios built once keep working indefinitely; two people can sustain personalised communication with thousands of customers in parallel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between marketing automation and a CRM?

The CRM is the record: who the customers are, what they bought, which conversations took place. Marketing automation is the action — the engine that sends messages based on that record. The strongest results appear when the two are connected, so campaign behaviour is written back into the CRM and CRM data in turn triggers the campaigns.

Which automation scenarios should we start with?

The three that pay for themselves fastest: a welcome sequence for new contacts, recovery of abandoned baskets or unfinished enquiries, and reactivation of customers who have gone quiet for sixty to ninety days. All three are simple to build, easy to measure, and profitable enough to fund the rest of the automation programme.

Is sending automated messages to customers legal under the GDPR?

Yes, on a correct basis: explicit consent for marketing communication, or legitimate interest within an existing customer relationship, plus a working unsubscribe link in every message. Automation actually helps compliance here, because unsubscribes and preferences apply instantly across every scenario instead of depending on somebody remembering to update a list.
