What is Malware?

Malicious software as an umbrella term: viruses, trojans, ransomware, spyware — any program built to steal, damage or extort.

Malware — short for malicious software — is the umbrella label for every program built with hostile intent, and under that umbrella lives a whole fauna of specialists. Viruses and worms spread on their own; trojans disguise themselves as legitimate files (an "invoice.exe", a crack for expensive software); ransomware locks company files for ransom — the past decade's headliner, claiming small-business victims daily; spyware and infostealers quietly harvest credentials — the fastest-growing species, feeding on passwords saved in browsers and selling them in bulk; and botnets conscript your devices into attack armies. The entry routes into companies form a stable top list: phishing attachments and links, pirated software and cracks, unpatched vulnerabilities in internet-facing systems, USB sticks and, increasingly, shady browser extensions. The defense that works is layered and boringly disciplined: prompt updates (most infections exploit holes published long ago), antivirus or EDR on every workstation, staff trained to recognize bait, administrator rights only where needed, two-factor authentication to blunt stolen passwords — and, as the final safety net, tested offline backups that turn even a successful attack into a recoverable bad day. One modern signal worth remembering: today's infections rarely announce themselves with chaos on screen; machines that "run perfectly" prove nothing — monitoring and periodic scans do.

How can I tell that a company computer is infected?

The classic signs — slowdowns, pop-ups, a hijacked browser — still exist, but modern malware prefers silence: infostealers and access trojans work invisibly to the naked eye. Serious detection is therefore instrumental: EDR with central alerting, scheduled scans and account monitoring (unusual logins mean passwords already stolen). On suspicion: isolate the machine from the network and call the specialist — not "let's wait and see".

Can Macs and phones get malware?

Yes — the immunity myth is dangerous precisely because it relaxes vigilance: macOS malware exists and is growing, and on phones the threat comes mainly from apps installed outside official stores, abusive permissions and phishing, which is platform-agnostic. The hygiene is identical everywhere: updates, official sources, attention to what you approve.

I opened a suspicious attachment — what do I do in the first minutes?

Disconnect the machine from the network (cable out, Wi-Fi off) to cut communication and spread, delete nothing (evidence matters), notify your IT contact, and from a different device change the passwords recently used on that machine — starting with email. The speed of the first minutes decides whether it is an incident or just a scare.
