What is a Marketplace?

The bazaar platform: one site, many sellers — huge traffic in exchange for commission, someone else's rules and shelf-to-shelf competition.

A marketplace is a bazaar in digital form: a platform with traffic and trust already built — eMAG in Romania, Amazon globally, and in their own service verticals Booking, Airbnb or Glovo — where third-party merchants sell, paying commission and playing by the house rules. For a seller, the offer's arithmetic is clear in both columns. You gain: immediate access to millions of buyers (traffic your own store would need years to build), the platform's trust rubbing off on you, ready-made infrastructure — payments, sometimes fulfillment logistics, exposure. You pay: a commission on each sale (typically somewhere in the 5-25% range depending on category), cut-throat competition on your own product page (sometimes including the platform's own products), rules and penalties you have no say in, limited access to customer data — the buyer essentially remains the platform's — and strategic dependency: one changed algorithm or commission can rewrite your business overnight. Hence the mature strategy validated by thousands of sellers: use the marketplace as a volume and acquisition engine while growing your own store in parallel for margin, brand and the direct relationship — with proper technical integration between the two (stock and orders synchronized via API, not operated by hand in two dashboards). The word has a second meaning for entrepreneurs with platform ambitions: building your own marketplace in a niche — a powerful business model, but with the classic chicken-and-egg problem (sellers follow buyers, who follow sellers) and matching technical complexity: split payments, seller accounts, commissions, disputes.

Why it matters for your business

Demand from day one

The platform's millions of visitors see your products immediately — you validate demand and generate cash flow without years of building traffic.

Rented infrastructure

Payments, customer invoicing, sometimes storage and delivery — the platform carries the operational weight in exchange for its commission.

A springboard, not a destination

Used strategically, the marketplace finances the growth of your own store — volume happens there; margin and loyal customers accumulate with you.

Frequently asked questions

How much of each sale does the marketplace take — and is there profit left?

Typical commissions run 5-25% by category, plus possible listing, logistics or internal promotion fees. Profitability must be computed per product across the whole chain: purchase cost + commission + logistics + returns + promotion — low-margin categories can lose money on every "successful" sale. The rule: enter with the products whose margin carries the commission, not with the entire catalog by reflex.

How do I keep stock and orders synchronized between the marketplace and my own store?

Through integration, not two people watching two dashboards: the big platforms expose APIs, and connectors tie the marketplace to your inventory system and store — a single stock pool, centralized orders, prices updated everywhere. Without synchronization the nightmare scenario is guaranteed: the same item sold simultaneously in both places with stock for only one — plus platform penalties for the cancellation.

I want to build a marketplace in my niche — where is the hard part?

Not the technology, though that is not trivial either (payments split between platform and sellers, merchant onboarding, dispute handling) — it is liquidity: buyers go where the offer is, sellers go where the buyers are. The strategies that break the loop: launch with supply you secure yourself (your own products or hand-recruited partners) in a narrow niche where you can become the place — and only then open the gates. Attracting both sides usually costs more than building the platform.
