What is local SEO?

Optimising for searches with local intent: the Google map pack, ‘near me’ queries and customers inside your genuine service radius.

For a large share of businesses — workshops, clinics, restaurants, salons, plumbers, dental practices, neighbourhood shops — the search battle worth winning is not the national one. It is the top three slots of the Google map pack, that block of results with names, star ratings, phone numbers and a directions button which appears for queries like ‘car repair Militari’ or ‘dentist near me’. Local SEO is the discipline of that battle, and its weapons differ from classic search optimisation. The centrepiece is the Google Business Profile: free to run, and left to rot with astonishing frequency. Claimed, filled in exhaustively — correct categories being the single most consequential choice in the whole profile — with real photographs, accurate hours, listed services and a phone number somebody genuinely answers, then kept alive with posts and updates. A tended profile beats a ghost profile with dull regularity. The engine of both ranking and conversion is reviews: their number, their rhythm, the average score and the replies, including replies to harsh ones, which are read by hundreds of future customers rather than by the complainant they address. Underneath sits consistency — identical name, address and phone number everywhere — plus genuine city or district pages on your own site for the areas you truly cover, written with real local substance rather than one template with the place name swapped. The return on the whole package is among the best in digital marketing, because the intent is maximal: nobody searching for an emergency plumber is conducting research.

Why it matters for your business

Present at the moment of maximum intent

Local searches mean ‘I want this now, here’ — the map pack places you directly in front of a customer already reaching for the phone.

Returns rarely matched elsewhere in marketing

The Business Profile costs nothing, reviews cost nothing, data consistency is a discipline — you compete on small budgets in a field where many rivals barely play.

Reviews do two jobs at once

They lift map ranking and simultaneously convince the customer comparing options, so every review requested at the right moment is both optimisation and sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get into the top three of the Google map pack for my area?

Three broad factors decide it: relevance, meaning accurate categories and services in the profile with site content aligned to the query; distance from the searcher, which is why realistic coverage claims matter; and prominence — review count, score and cadence, profile completeness, mentions and consistent data across the web. For most businesses the biggest single jump comes from finishing the profile properly and then requesting reviews systematically. There is no paid shortcut into the organic map block.

How should we handle negative reviews — can they be deleted?

Google removes only reviews breaking its rules — spam, conflicts of interest, abusive language — and you report those from the profile. Legitimate but painful ones you answer instead: calmly, concretely, with a remedy and no argument. The real audience is the thousands of future readers, and a business replying professionally to criticism inspires more trust than one with a suspiciously immaculate 5.0. Structurally, a steady flow of genuine positive reviews dilutes any single bad episode.

We have no premises open to the public — can we still appear in local results?

Yes. The Business Profile can be configured as a service-area business: no displayed address, with declared coverage zones such as cities or districts, and you surface in searches from those areas. Reinforce it with genuine area pages on your site — real content per zone covering services, response times and completed jobs — and reviews that mention the localities naturally. What you must not do is invent addresses or rent virtual offices to run several profiles; that breaches the rules and gets profiles suspended.
