What is a dedicated server?
A whole physical machine, yours alone: guaranteed performance with no resource neighbours — the top rung of classic hosting.
On the hosting ladder, a dedicated server is the whole building rather than a flat inside it — or more precisely the whole building leased: one entire physical machine in a data centre, with all of its resources, processors, memory and disks, reserved exclusively for you. No shared-hosting neighbours eating your capacity, no virtualisation layer sitting between you and the hardware as on a VPS. The classic arguments hold up well. Maximum, constant performance, because nobody else touches the machine, which suits large databases, serious traffic and heavy processing. Complete isolation, occasionally a compliance requirement outright, since certain certification schemes and enterprise contracts exclude shared infrastructure by name. Total freedom of configuration. And the argument that pleasantly surprises anyone who runs the numbers: raw price per unit of resource, where aggressive European providers frequently undercut the cloud equivalent at high specifications. The counter-arguments are equally concrete. Administration is entirely yours — operating system, security, patching, backups; a bare machine arrives with none of it, and the managed variant that includes administration costs more while turning a component into a service. Elasticity is absent: resources are fixed, peaks do not scale with a click, quiet months do not cost less, and growth means a new machine plus a migration. Hardware failure is the provider’s to replace and yours to survive, which is why redundancy on dedicated hardware has to be designed rather than assumed.

Dedicated server or VPS — how do I choose between them?
By the size and steadiness of the workload. A VPS covers small and medium needs elegantly — company sites, mid-market applications — at low cost and with flexibility. Dedicated hardware enters when the resources you constantly consume exceed sensible VPS tiers, or when hardware isolation is a stated requirement. The practical threshold: once the VPS configuration you need costs roughly what a dedicated machine costs, the dedicated machine gives more for the same money, provided administration is solved.
What does ‘managed’ mean here, and is the premium worth paying?
It means administration is included: the provider patches, secures, monitors and backs up, so you receive the machine as a service rather than as a responsibility. For any company without an in-house systems administrator it is almost always worth it, because the price difference is a fraction of one security incident or one long outage on a neglected box. The equivalent alternative is a bare machine plus an administration contract with your IT partner — same safety net, different invoice.
What happens when the physical hardware fails?
The provider replaces the component or the machine, and serious service agreements state the intervention time — but restoring your data and services remains your problem. Without off-site backups and a rehearsed restore plan, a hardware swap hands you an empty machine rather than your business back. Correct architecture therefore always includes automated backups in another location, monitoring, written rebuild documentation and, for critical systems, a second machine or a failover plan.
