IT Glossary
What is a Headless CMS?
A CMS with the display cut off: content is managed in one panel and delivered through an API to any 'head' — site, mobile app, in-store screen.
A classic CMS is an all-inclusive package: you administer content in it, and the same system displays it through its themes and templates — one head on one body. A headless CMS removes the head. What remains is pure content administration — a friendly panel for the marketing team, approval workflows, multilingual support — while delivery happens through an API to however many 'heads' you point at it: the website your developers build in whatever technology they prefer, the mobile app, screens in physical stores, a marketplace storefront. It earns its keep in three situations: content consumed on several channels (write the product description once, it appears everywhere), development teams wanting full freedom over interface and performance (headless plus a static or Next.js front end is the recipe behind many very fast sites), or content structures that outgrow classic templates. It is the wrong tool for the ordinary brochure site or blog, where classic WordPress delivers the same outcome at half the complexity — headless means two components to build and maintain instead of one. Market names to recognise in proposals: Strapi, Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok — plus WordPress itself run in headless mode, the pragmatic hybrid many migrations choose.

Why it matters for your business
One content source, every channel
Texts and images managed once feed the site, the app and any future screen — no copying and no diverging versions.
Technological freedom on the front end
Developers build the site's face with their preferred modern tools — speed and experience are no longer capped by CMS themes.
Redesign without content migration
The head changes, the body remains: a new interface connects to the same CMS — content and editorial work survive intact.
Frequently asked questions
Headless CMS or classic WordPress for our site?
The pragmatic test: how many channels consume the content, and how demanding is the interface? One channel with normal expectations — classic WordPress, simpler and cheaper; multi-channel, critical performance or complex content structures — headless amortises. The hybrid of WordPress used headless keeps a familiar panel for the team.
Is a headless project more expensive?
Initially, usually yes — you build separately the interface a classic CMS gives you through themes; recovery comes from reuse (a second channel is nearly free on the content side) and from cleaner maintenance of separated components. For a single simple site, the maths rarely favours headless.
Can the marketing team work as easily in a headless CMS?
Modern panels (Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok) are friendly and offer page previews before publishing — but demand a demonstration on your team's exact workflow: preview and visual editing are where rushed implementations disappoint editors.
