IT Glossary

What is geolocation?

Determining the position of a device — through satellite positioning, wireless networks and mobile masts — the foundation of tracked deliveries, fleet management and nearby-me services.

Ask how a phone knows where it is and the honest answer is that it guesses very well from several sources at once. Satellite positioning gives a few metres outdoors and almost nothing inside a warehouse. Nearby wireless network names, matched against a global database, work indoors and in city canyons where satellites fail. Mobile masts give a coarse position that is enough to pick a country or a district. Internet addresses, the weakest source, place a desktop visitor roughly in the right city and confidently in the wrong one about a fifth of the time. Devices blend these continuously and report a position together with an accuracy radius, and it is the radius that most business software ignores at its peril. For a company the practical uses are unglamorous and valuable: knowing where the delivery is, proving where field work happened, routing the nearest technician, showing the correct branch, pricing shipping by real distance. The constraints are equally practical. Location about an identifiable person is personal data under GDPR, precision costs battery, and every accuracy figure quoted in a proposal is an outdoor figure on a clear day.

Why it matters for your business

Fleet and field work made visible

Live positions turn dispatching, route planning and customer promises into decisions based on facts rather than telephone estimates.

The where-is-my-order experience

Customers who can see the delivery approaching stop calling to ask, which reduces support volume and improves the review afterwards.

Local context put to work

Correct branch, correct currency, accurate shipping cost and proximity-based offers all follow from knowing where the visitor actually is.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to track company vehicles and employees by GPS?

In the EU it is permissible but conditional. You need a defined purpose such as fleet safety or dispatch efficiency, a lawful basis that is normally legitimate interest rather than consent for employees, a written policy the staff have seen, a data protection impact assessment, retention limits, and no monitoring outside working hours. Tracking the person rather than the vehicle is where employers reliably get into trouble.

How accurate is location data and what can I rely on?

Outdoors with a clear sky, satellite positioning lands within about five metres; in dense city streets it can drift by tens of metres; indoors it effectively stops working and wireless positioning takes over at a similar accuracy. Address-based location for desktop visitors is city-level at best. Design processes to tolerate error — confirm arrival with a scan or a tap rather than a coordinate alone.

Does location tracking drain field staff phone batteries?

Continuous high-precision tracking will consume a noticeable share of a battery over a shift, which is why field workers disable apps that do it carelessly. Well-built applications sample adaptively — often while moving, rarely while stationary — and use lower-power sources when precision is not needed. Ask any supplier for measured battery consumption over an eight-hour shift before signing.
