What is geofencing?
Geofencing is the technique by which a virtual perimeter drawn on a map automatically triggers actions when a device enters or leaves it.
A van leaves the yard at two in the morning and a message arrives on the fleet manager's phone before it reaches the main road. Nobody was watching a screen; a boundary was crossed and a rule fired. That is geofencing: a circle or polygon defined around a real location — a depot, a client site, a construction perimeter, a shopping centre — combined with a device that reports its position, so that entry or exit becomes an event software can act on. The action is whatever the business needs: a notification, an automatic timesheet entry, a status change on a delivery, a message offering something to a customer who just walked past the branch. Three families of use dominate in practice. Field operations use it to confirm that work happened where it was supposed to, without the driver or technician having to remember to press anything. Asset protection uses it to detect movement outside working hours. Marketing uses it far more cautiously than vendors suggest, because the legal and reputational cost of getting location messaging wrong is high. In every case the enabling detail is consent and transparency, not the mapping.

Frequently asked questions
How does geofencing differ from geolocation?
Geolocation answers where a device is; geofencing answers whether it has crossed a line you drew. One is a coordinate, the other is a rule with a consequence. Geofencing is built on top of geolocation, but the operational difference matters: tracking produces a map somebody has to watch, while fencing produces events that reach the right person without anyone watching anything.
Does geofencing drain the phone battery?
It did in early implementations that polled satellite positioning continuously. Modern mobile operating systems provide a dedicated boundary-monitoring service that uses cell towers and wireless networks and wakes the application only when a crossing is detected, at a battery cost measured in low single-digit percentages a day. Applications that ignore that service and poll manually are still capable of ruining a workday.
Is it legal to use geofencing on employees or customers?
Under GDPR, location data about identifiable people is personal data, so you need a lawful basis, transparency and proportionality. For employees, monitoring a vehicle during working hours for a stated purpose is generally defensible with a written policy, prior information and no tracking outside working time. For customers, expect consent to be the practical basis, freely given and easy to withdraw.
