IT Glossary
What is a breadcrumb?
A breadcrumb is the trail of links in the style of Home > Category > Subcategory > Page, usually shown at the top, which tells the visitor where they are and lets them move up a level in one click.
Home > Appliances > Refrigerators > Model XYZ. That discreet trail of links at the top of a page is named after the crumbs Hansel and Gretel dropped to find their way back. Its role is twofold. For the visitor, it answers the question of where am I instantly and offers the natural shortcut back: a customer who arrived straight from a search result on a single product moves up to the whole category with one click, instead of leaving the site and searching again. For Google, the breadcrumb draws the hierarchy of the site and ties pages together — and when marked up with structured data it appears in the search results themselves, replacing a cryptic URL with a readable path. The commercial stake is this: most visitors do not come through the front door, they land from search directly on a deep page. A breadcrumb quietly leads them toward the rest of what you sell rather than letting them leave after one page.

Why it matters for your business
Visitors explore instead of leaving
Someone landing from search on a single product reaches the whole category in one click — more pages seen and more chances of a sale from the same visit.
Site structure made clear to Google
Breadcrumbs link pages hierarchically and pass authority toward category pages, which is a steady, low-cost help for both indexing and ranking.
More attractive search results
With BreadcrumbList structured data, Google shows a readable path instead of a URL — a cleaner result that inspires more confidence and earns more clicks.
Frequently asked questions
On which pages should breadcrumbs appear?
On every page at least one level below the home page: categories, subcategories, products, blog articles. The usual exceptions are the home page itself and checkout pages, where any additional navigation element distracts from completing the order.
Do breadcrumbs matter for SEO?
Yes, in two concrete ways: they create consistent internal links to category pages, strengthening their position, and implemented with structured data they change how the result is displayed in Google, showing a navigation path instead of a URL. It is not a spectacular ranking factor, but it is cheap, safe and free of downsides.
What mistakes are commonly made with breadcrumbs?
The most frequent: turning the last element, the current page, into a pointless link to itself; trails that do not match the real structure of the site; omitting them on the mobile version, where navigation is hardest; and skipping structured data markup, which leaves the enhanced search display on the table for nothing.
