What is Blockchain?

A transaction ledger copied across thousands of computers, append-only and practically impossible to falsify — the technology beneath cryptocurrencies.

Imagine an accounting ledger duplicated simultaneously on thousands of machines, where pages can only be added — never erased or rewritten — and every new page is validated by the whole network. That is blockchain, and its genuinely novel property is trust between parties who do not know each other, achieved without a central authority; it is why cryptocurrencies function with no bank in the middle. Beyond crypto, the serious applications are niche: traceability across multi-company supply chains, notarial proof that a document existed at a date, contracts that execute themselves. The uncomfortable truth for an ordinary business is that in nearly every routine scenario, a conventional database is faster, cheaper and simpler to run; the distributed ledger earns its cost only when several organisations that cannot extend each other trust must share one record of truth. So when a proposal arrives wearing the word, the first sober question is: what does this solve here that a plain database would not solve for a tenth of the money? Knowing that answer pattern protects budgets better than any whitepaper.

Why it matters for your business

You understand what the hype is about

Revolutionary pitches and alarmist articles can be judged soberly — and you avoid paying for expensive technology aimed at nonexistent problems.

You recognise the genuine use cases

Multi-company traceability, proof a document existed, cross-border settlement — the niches where a distributed ledger truly adds something new.

Prepared for partner questions

When a corporate client or grant application mentions exploring emerging technologies, you know what is feasible and what is literature.

Frequently asked questions

Is blockchain the same thing as Bitcoin?

No — Bitcoin is the first and most famous application of blockchain, the way email is one application of the internet; distributed-ledger technology also exists in versions with no currency at all, used by consortia of companies.

Does blockchain make any sense for a small or mid-sized business?

Directly, almost never — cost and complexity exceed the benefit over an ordinary database. Indirectly, possibly: if a large partner builds its supply-chain traceability on a ledger, you may end up connecting to their system.

What are smart contracts?

Programs running on a blockchain that execute clauses automatically — on confirmed delivery, the payment releases. Conceptually powerful, but their code is literally the law: a programming error becomes a wrongly enforced, unappealable clause.
