What is a software update?
A newer version of a program shipped by its maker: it fixes faults, closes security holes or adds capability.
The notification saying an update is available, which most people postpone for months, is statistically the most valuable click in a small company's security posture. An update replaces parts of a program with versions the vendor has corrected: a small patch closes a newly discovered vulnerability, a minor release fixes bugs, a major upgrade changes how features work. The uncomfortable pattern behind most compromised business websites is not a sophisticated attacker but a publicly documented hole, known for months, left unpatched while automated scanners swept the internet looking for exactly that version. So for your company the question was never whether to update, but who does it in a controlled way. An update applied blindly can break a working feature, which is why the correct procedure always includes a backup taken before and a functional check taken after — the two steps you are actually buying when you pay for a maintenance retainer rather than a fire brigade.

Why it matters for your business
Security holes get closed
Published vulnerabilities are exploited by automated bots within days. A patch applied on time takes you off the list of easy targets entirely.
Faults fixed before you report them
Bugs found by other customers of the same vendor arrive already repaired in your next release, at no cost and with no support ticket from you.
Compatibility preserved over time
Browsers, phones and connected services keep moving. Maintained software keeps pace; abandoned software degrades quietly until something visible breaks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an update and an upgrade?
An update is a correction inside the same version line — repairs and security work, normally included at no extra cost. An upgrade moves you to a new major version with new capability; it may carry a licence cost and often requires adaptation work on your side.
Why did our website break after an update?
Almost always because an old plugin or theme was not compatible with the new version. That is why serious updates are applied first to a staging copy with a backup ready, rather than directly to the live site on a busy trading day.
How fast does a security patch need to be applied?
For critical vulnerabilities under active exploitation, in hours or days rather than weeks. Automated attacks scan the internet continuously for unpatched instances of exactly the software you are running, and they do not wait for your next maintenance window.
