What does above the fold mean?
Above the fold is the part of a web page a visitor sees immediately, before any scrolling — the first screen, on which the decision to stay or leave is made.
The phrase is inherited from print. Folded newspapers on a kiosk showed only the top half of the front page, so whatever sold the paper had to fit above the fold. On the web the fold is simply the bottom edge of the screen: everything visible without scrolling is the first, and very often the only, real contact you get with a visitor. Behavioural research keeps arriving at the same conclusion — the decision to stay or leave is made within seconds, on the strength of that single screen. Which turns into a blunt question about your own site: can a stranger tell from the first screen what you sell, who you sell it to, and what they are supposed to do next? A clear headline, one concrete benefit and a visible action button beat any rotating slider that says nothing. Beware the opposite trap as well. Cramming everything above the fold produces clutter; people scroll perfectly happily, but only once the first screen has given them a reason to.

Why it matters for your business
The first seconds actually used
A first screen with a clear message and a visible next step cuts immediate bounces — the exact place where most traffic is won or thrown away.
More conversions from identical traffic
A primary action button placed where nobody has to scroll for it consistently earns more clicks. That is a layout decision, not an extra budget line.
The message reaches people in a hurry
Visitors who never scroll at all — a far from negligible share — still leave knowing who you are, what you offer and how to reach you.
Frequently asked questions
What belongs above the fold on a company website?
Four things: a headline stating concretely what you offer and to whom, a subheading or benefit that differentiates you, one primary action such as request a quote or book a call, and a trust signal — client logos, a rating, years in business. Decorative sliders and generic welcome copy waste precisely this space.
Where is the fold, if every screen is a different size?
There is no fixed line — a laptop, a tablet and a phone all cut the page at different heights. In practice you design for the screen sizes that dominate your own analytics, applying one rule: the core message and the main action must be visible on the smallest relevant screen, which is almost always a phone.
Does what sits above the fold affect SEO?
Yes, in two ways. Google devalues pages whose first screen is occupied by intrusive ads or interstitials instead of content, and the rendering speed of that area is literally the LCP metric inside Core Web Vitals. A light first screen with an optimised image and an immediately visible message serves users and rankings at the same time.
