What is remarketing?

Remarketing means showing ads to people who have already visited your website, in order to bring them back to complete the action they started.

The product you looked at yesterday in an online shop follows you today across social media and news sites. That is no coincidence; it is remarketing — advertising targeted exclusively at people who have already visited a website. The economics behind it are strong. The vast majority of visitors leave without buying on a first visit, but rarely because they rejected the offer: they compare, they postpone, a phone call interrupts them. Remarketing catches them afterwards with a relevant message — exactly the product they viewed, the category they browsed, or the basket they abandoned mid-checkout. For a marketing budget it is usually the channel with the best return, because you are addressing people who already know you, and the cost per conversion lands far below campaigns aimed at a cold audience. The technical condition is unglamorous but absolute: the site needs correctly installed measurement tools and valid cookie consent, otherwise the audience lists stay empty and the campaigns have nobody to reach.

Why it matters for your business

Budget spent on the warmest audience

Ads go only to people who already visited your site — conversion rates run several times higher than for an audience that never heard of you.

Sales recovered with personalized messages

Dynamic remarketing automatically shows the exact products viewed or left in a basket — the most direct instrument for recovering nearly lost orders.

The brand stays in the customer’s mind

In decisions that take time, such as expensive services and B2B purchases, a discreet presence throughout the comparison keeps your company on the shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

What does my site need before I can run remarketing?

Three things: tracking codes installed correctly, meaning the Google tag and the Meta pixel; a GDPR-compliant consent banner that passes visitor consent through to the platforms via Consent Mode; and, for dynamic remarketing, a product feed connected to the advertising account. Missing any one of them means incomplete audience lists and campaigns with nobody left to target.

Is remarketing legal under the GDPR?

Yes, with consent: the visitor must accept marketing cookies before the site adds them to an audience list, and a refusal has to be respected. This is why the consent banner is not decorative paperwork — implemented badly it either exposes you to penalties or quietly empties your remarketing lists while the campaigns keep spending.

Doesn’t advertising that follows people around annoy customers?

The risk is real with lazily configured campaigns. The standard antidotes are a frequency cap limiting how often one person sees an ad each day, automatic exclusion of people who already bought, and a sensible maximum age for the audience list. Used with restraint, remarketing reads as a useful reminder rather than as harassment.
