What is a POS?
Point of sale: the place where a sale is closed — from the card terminal to the complete system uniting till, stock and reporting.
POS literally means point of sale, but in business conversations it covers two related things worth separating carefully. The POS terminal is the card machine supplied by a bank or a fintech, with its own fees and settlement times, and legally mandatory for retailers above certain turnover thresholds in Romania. The POS system is the software running the sale in a shop, restaurant or salon: the till interface where an operator rings up products, the fiscal link to the cash register (in Romania through electronic-journal registers reporting to ANAF, the Romanian tax authority), automatic stock deduction on every receipt, promotions and loyalty handling, and sales reports by hour, product and employee. The difference between a shop that merely prints receipts and one genuinely managed by data sits in that software, and above all in its integration. An isolated POS produces the same islands as any isolated software — shop stock unknown to the website, sales retyped into accounting by hand. A POS integrated with inventory or ERP and with the online store closes the omnichannel loop: one real stock figure, online orders collected in store, the day’s position visible in the company dashboard with nobody retyping anything. When choosing, the criteria matter in this order of pain: flawless local fiscal compliance, which is non-negotiable; real integration with your inventory system and e-commerce through documented APIs or existing connectors, where brochure promises usually die; offline operation, because selling must not stop when the internet does; and reporting that reflects reality.

Why it matters for your business
Stock deducts itself on every receipt
A sale rung up at the till updates inventory in real time — surprise stocktakes and do we still have any left vanish as questions.
The shop’s day, visible live
Sales by hour, product, cashier and location — the manager sees reality in a dashboard rather than in a story told at closing time.
The bridge to omnichannel
A POS integrated with e-commerce and inventory makes a single stock figure, click-and-collect and a customer recognized everywhere genuinely possible.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a cash register and a POS system?
The cash register is the fiscal obligation — the device issuing the receipt and reporting to ANAF, the Romanian tax authority. The POS system is the business layer above it: the selling interface, stock, promotions and reports, which commands the register rather than replacing it. You can operate legally with the register alone; you can actually manage the shop only with the full system.
What happens to sales when the internet goes down?
This is the mandatory test when choosing. A serious system works offline — it sells, issues receipts and keeps records locally — then synchronizes everything once the connection returns. Cloud-only systems that freeze without connectivity turn a trivial outage into a closed shop. Ask explicitly what works offline, for how long, and how the data is reconciled on resynchronization.
How do I connect the in-store POS to the online shop so there is one stock figure?
Through integration with the inventory system as the single source: the POS and the e-commerce platform both connect, via APIs or connectors, to the same stock. A sale in the shop reduces online availability within minutes, and the reverse holds too. The practical keys are reserving stock when an online order arrives, handling exceptions such as stocktake differences and cross-channel returns, and choosing systems whose connectors already exist — integration that can be built always costs more than integration that already ships.
