What is PIM (Product Information Management)?

PIM (Product Information Management) is the central system where a company administers all product information — descriptions, images, specifications — and from which it distributes them automatically to the website, marketplaces and catalogs.

A single product description often lives in five places at once: on the website, in a marketplace listing, inside the shopping feed, in a PDF catalog and in somebody’s spreadsheet. Every one of those copies drifts a little further from the others each month, until customers who check two channels find two different products. PIM — product information management — resolves exactly that chaos by giving each product one official record: name, description, specifications, images, translations, held centrally and distributed automatically to every sales channel. For an online shop carrying hundreds or thousands of items the difference is enormous, because a change of price or wording is made once and arrives everywhere, with no copy-paste and no contradictory versions left behind. In practical terms a PIM removes whole hours of manual work each week, eliminates the errors that generate returns and complaints, and lets you launch new products across several channels on the same day rather than over the same fortnight.

Why it matters for your business

One source of truth for products

Descriptions, prices and images are administered in a single place — contradictory versions between website, marketplace and catalog simply disappear.

Faster launches on new channels

When the data is already structured in a PIM, publishing the catalog on a new marketplace or in another language takes days instead of months.

Fewer returns and complaints

Complete, accurate specifications on every channel reduce orders placed on wrong information — precisely the category of return that eats your margin.

Frequently asked questions

From how many products is a PIM worth having?

There is no fixed threshold, but the operational signal is unmistakable: if the team updates the same products by hand in two or three different systems, and mismatches in price or description keep surfacing, a PIM pays for itself quickly — usually from a few hundred products, or from the moment a second sales channel appears.

What is the difference between PIM and ERP?

The ERP manages the commercial and accounting side — stock, purchase prices, invoices — while the PIM manages presentation: descriptions, images, attributes, translations. The two normally integrate, with the ERP supplying price and availability while the PIM adds the content and publishes everything out to the channels.

Can I use my e-commerce platform as a PIM?

With a single sales channel, yes — the shop’s admin panel is entirely sufficient. Trouble starts when you also sell on marketplaces or in several languages: at that point a dedicated PIM, or a synchronization module integrated with the platform, is what saves the team from manual spreadsheet exports every week.
