What is hybrid cloud?
Mixed infrastructure: some systems run on your own servers, the rest in public cloud — connected so they work as one.
Between everything on our servers and everything in the cloud there is a third route, and it is the one most companies with any history end up taking. In a hybrid cloud, the systems that have reasons to stay local stay local, everything else moves to public cloud, and the two worlds are securely connected so they operate as a single environment. The typical reasons for the local part are recognisable: legacy applications that are hard to move, such as a fifteen-year-old ERP wired into production machinery; strict data-residency requirements; equipment on the shop floor that needs instant response; or simply a server that has not finished depreciating yet. What usually moves to cloud is whatever benefits most from elasticity: the website and online shop, backups, where an off-site copy becomes trivial, test environments, and collaboration tools. For your company, hybrid is better understood as a pragmatic stage than as a destination. Most healthy migrations spend years in mixed operation, moving systems one at a time in order of benefit against risk, rather than attempting a weekend big bang.

Frequently asked questions
Are hybrid cloud and multi-cloud the same thing?
No. Hybrid means a combination of on-premise and public cloud; multi-cloud means using several cloud providers in parallel, such as Azure alongside AWS. Mid-sized companies arrive at hybrid naturally, whereas deliberate multi-cloud is usually a luxury of large corporations.
What complexity does a hybrid architecture hide?
Two environments to administer instead of one: secure networking between them through VPN or dedicated links, unified user identity, and monitoring and backup on both sides. It is manageable but demands discipline, because an improvised hybrid quickly becomes the worst of both worlds.
What should move to the cloud first from a local setup?
The quick wins with low risk: off-site backup, email and collaboration, the website and test environments. The heavy systems — ERP, production databases — are left until last, and that decision is taken on analysis rather than enthusiasm.
