What is Cloud Computing?
Computing power, storage and applications rented over the internet and paid by consumption — the electricity grid of modern IT.
Companies don't build their own power plants — they buy electricity from the grid, as much as they use. Cloud computing applies that exact logic to IT: instead of buying servers that start aging the day of the invoice, you rent processing capacity, storage and services from providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, over the internet, billed monthly by usage. Odds are your business is in the cloud already without calling it that: email on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, invoicing and accounting online — all running on someone else's infrastructure. For a growing company the decisive argument is flexibility: start small, scale without threshold investments, and receive as standard a level of redundancy and physical security that would cost a fortune to replicate on-site. The genuine caution points: monthly costs demand discipline (resources left running keep billing), and dependence on one provider is managed through portable architecture and a contractual guarantee that your data exports.

Is it safe to keep company data in the cloud?
The data centers of the major providers are guarded and certified at a level no company premises can match; the real risk has moved to configuration — accounts without two-factor authentication, over-broad permissions, resources exposed publicly. The cloud is secure; careless use of it is not.
Cloud or our own server — which is cheaper?
On total cost (power, cooling, licenses, replacement every five years, plus the salary hours of whoever looks after it), the cloud usually wins for variable workloads and small teams; an owned server can stay rational for large steady loads or strict data-residency demands. Run the numbers on your case, not on brochures.
What is vendor lock-in in the cloud?
The more provider-specific services you adopt, the pricier moving elsewhere becomes. It's managed at the architecture stage: portable technologies (containers, open standards) for the core, proprietary services only where they add clear value — plus a data export tested periodically.
Does GDPR allow using American cloud providers?
It does, under conditions. The large providers run European regions and offer data processing agreements together with transfer mechanisms, so the practical questions become where the data physically rests, who may access it for support purposes, and whether your own documentation records those answers. Regulated categories usually stay in an EU region as a matter of policy.
