What is a favicon?

The favicon is the small icon associated with a website, displayed in the browser tab, in bookmarks, in browsing history and in Google's mobile search results.

It is the smallest asset a company owns and one of the few that appears in front of a customer several hundred times a month. The favicon is the tiny image a browser shows beside your page title in the tab, in the bookmark list, in history, on the phone home screen when someone saves your site, and — the part most people miss — next to your listing in Google's mobile search results. Sixteen pixels of brand, sitting immediately beside a competitor's sixteen pixels. Practically it is a small set of images referenced from the site's head section: a modern scalable version, a couple of raster sizes for older browsers, and larger versions for mobile home screens and progressive web apps. Nothing about it is technically demanding. What makes it worth a paragraph in a glossary aimed at buyers is the ratio: a default grey globe in the tab is one of the very few flaws a visitor notices without knowing why, it takes an afternoon at most to fix, and it costs nothing to keep right once the design system holds the source file.

Why it matters for your business

Instant recognition among open tabs

Users who keep a dozen tabs open return to yours by icon rather than by reading titles, which measurably helps repeat visits.

Visibility in mobile search results

Google shows the icon beside mobile listings, so a distinct mark occupies attention that a blank placeholder simply forfeits.

A professionalism signal at minimal cost

Absence reads as an unfinished site to exactly the visitors evaluating whether your company is a serious supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes and formats does a favicon need?

A practical set covers everything: an SVG for modern browsers, a multi-resolution ICO at 16, 32 and 48 pixels for older ones, a 180 pixel PNG for Apple home screens, and 192 and 512 pixel PNGs referenced from the web app manifest for Android. Any decent generator produces the whole set from one square source image in a couple of minutes.

Why does my favicon not appear in Google?

Usual causes, in order of frequency: the icon is not reachable from the site root and the reference in the page head is wrong; it is blocked in robots.txt; it is not square or is below the minimum size; the crawler has not revisited the site since it changed. Google also caches icons for a long time, so allow weeks before concluding something is broken.

Can we use the company logo directly as the favicon?

Only if the logo survives being shrunk to a fingernail. Wide wordmarks turn into grey smudges at sixteen pixels. The usual solution is a dedicated mark derived from the logo — the initial, the symbol, or a simplified element — with high contrast, no fine detail and a background that works against both light and dark browser themes.
