What is an abandoned cart?
An abandoned cart is a situation where a visitor adds products to the basket of an online shop but leaves before completing payment.
Most baskets filled in an online shop never reach payment. The customer adds products, gets close to the end and walks away. That is the abandoned cart, and the reasons behind it are surprisingly mundane: shipping costs revealed only at the final step, a compulsory account, a form that is too long, or a page that crawls on a phone. For your business every abandoned cart is an almost-completed sale: the customer already chose the product, already accepted the price, and stopped one step short of paying. The encouraging part is that a share of those orders is recoverable — through automated reminder emails, through simplifying the completion flow, and through showing total costs transparently from the beginning. A shop that measures and treats cart abandonment sells visibly more from exactly the same traffic, without a single extra euro spent on advertising.

Why it matters for your business
Sales recovered from traffic already paid for
Automated recovery emails bring back a share of departed customers — additional revenue earned without any increase in the advertising budget.
A clear diagnosis of site problems
The exact step where customers give up shows what is blocking them: the shipping charge, the form, the payment options — so you know what to repair first.
Margin rises with the completion rate
Every percentage point of baskets carried through means extra orders per month against the same fixed costs, which lands directly in profit.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main reasons customers abandon their cart?
Most commonly: delivery costs discovered only at the end, forced account creation, a long order form, the absence of a preferred payment method, and trust doubts on a site with no clear contact details or visible returns policy. Nearly all of them are fixed by changing the completion page rather than by cutting prices.
How do cart recovery emails work?
If the visitor left an address, either at login or at the first step of the order, the shop sends an automated message, typically after one or two hours and again a day later, showing the products still in the basket with a direct link to finish. A small incentive such as free shipping raises the return rate significantly.
Can I see in numbers how many carts are abandoned on my site?
Yes. E-commerce platforms and analytics tools such as GA4 show how many users begin checkout and how many complete it, step by step. The ratio between those two figures is your abandonment rate, and tracking it monthly tells you immediately whether a change to the site helped or hurt.
