What is live chat?
The conversation window on a website: the visitor asks now, at the moment of decision — and somebody, human or bot, actually answers.
The visitor sitting on your pricing page with one unresolved question is the most valuable person in your traffic — and their classic alternatives are bad. A contact form promising a reply within 24 to 48 hours loses to the competitor who answers today. A phone number loses to entire generations who would rather not call anybody. Live chat is the discreet window in the corner of the page that catches exactly that moment: the question asked now, the answer arriving in minutes, the objection handled while the buyer is still warm. Industry data keeps confirming that visitors who use chat convert several times more often than the rest — not because the widget is magic, but because people who ask are already close to deciding. Operational honesty is the price of admission: a window labeled live that nobody answers is worse than no window at all, because it is a promise broken in real time. Hence the architecture that works for a company with normal staffing — a bot handles frequent questions and qualifies enquiries around the clock, a human joins the conversations that matter during working hours, and outside them the window says plainly that somebody will reply at nine tomorrow and captures a contact. Tools are abundant, from free tiers to platforms wired into a CRM; the difference is made by the process behind them.

Why it matters for your business
The customer caught at the moment of decision
An objection resolved on the spot, on the pricing page or in the basket, rescues exactly the sales that used to disappear silently.
The channel entire generations prefer
People who will never phone you write without hesitation — chat opens a route to customers who were otherwise invisible to your sales team.
Every conversation is market research
Chat questions show in black and white what the site fails to explain, what the offer is missing, and the words real customers actually use.
Frequently asked questions
We have nobody dedicated to chat — does it still make sense on the site?
Yes, with the right architecture: a bot for frequent questions and round-the-clock qualification, notifications to existing colleagues for warm conversations during working hours (chat needs somebody who replies within a few minutes from a phone, not somebody glued to a screen), and an honest message that captures a contact the rest of the time. The one thing to avoid is claiming to be online with nobody behind it.
Website chat or a WhatsApp button — which works better?
For many companies WhatsApp wins: the customer writes from an app already open, the conversation persists so either side can pick it up later, and your number stays in their contacts. The pragmatic combination offers both — quick chat for those who prefer anonymity, WhatsApp for a longer relationship — then you measure and keep whichever your own audience uses.
Doesn’t a chat window irritate visitors?
An aggressive one does; the pop-up that jumps out after three seconds with a sound effect is universally ranked as annoying. The civilized version is a discreet button always in the same corner, with at most a gentle contextual invitation after time spent on decision pages such as pricing or checkout. The rule is that chat is an open door, not a salesperson tugging at a sleeve.
