What is firmware?

The software embedded inside equipment — routers, printers, cameras, industrial machines — the layer nobody sees and most companies never update.

Every device in your building runs software, including the ones nobody thinks of as computers. Firmware is that software: written into the equipment itself, controlling how a router directs traffic, how a printer talks to the network, how a camera streams video, how a production machine executes a cycle. Unlike the applications on a laptop it rarely announces updates, has no visible interface, and continues working for years without attention — which is precisely the problem. Security researchers publish vulnerabilities in this equipment continuously, and the manufacturers publish fixes, but the fix only exists once someone installs it. The typical mid-sized company has a router that has not been updated since installation, several networked printers with default administrative passwords, and a camera recorder reachable from the internet running a version with a publicly documented flaw. That inventory is how attackers get inside networks that had a perfectly good firewall, and it is also why cyber-insurance questionnaires now ask about patch management on network equipment specifically. The remedy is unglamorous: know what you own, know who updates it, and know which devices no longer receive fixes at all.

Start with an inventory: every network device, its model, current version and who is responsible. Then schedule quarterly checks against manufacturer advisories, test on one device before the fleet, and always take a configuration backup first. Business-grade equipment usually offers central management that automates the whole cycle, which is one concrete reason to avoid consumer hardware in an office.

Can a firmware update break something?

Occasionally, yes — that is a real risk, not an excuse. Updates can reset settings, drop support for an old protocol something else depends on, or fail midway and leave a device unusable. Mitigation is routine: back up configurations, never update over a wireless connection, avoid updating everything on the same evening, and keep the previous version available where the manufacturer allows a rollback.

What do we do with equipment that no longer receives updates?

Treat end-of-support as a security event with a deadline, not a budget suggestion. Where replacement must wait, isolate the device on a separate network segment, block its internet access in both directions, change every default credential and monitor its traffic. An unsupported internet-facing device with a known vulnerability is not a risk to manage; it is an incident scheduled for later.
