IT Glossary

What is checkout?

Checkout is the order completion process in an online shop: the steps where the customer enters delivery details, chooses shipping and payment, and confirms the purchase.

Between add to basket and order placed lies a critical stretch that every online shop either navigates fast or loses outright: the checkout. Here the customer fills in an address, picks a courier, selects a payment method and presses the final button — and every extra field, every unclear step and every second of waiting can make them abandon. It is not the same thing as payment processing: checkout is the entire completion experience, of which payment is only the last step. For your business it is the point with the most direct effect on revenue, because the whole marketing budget and all the work on the site are settled in these few screens. A good checkout asks only for what is strictly necessary, allows ordering without an account, shows the total cost from the first step, and works flawlessly on a phone, which is where the majority of orders are now placed.

Why it matters for your business

More orders from the same baskets

Every field removed and every step clarified lowers abandonment — checkout optimisation raises revenue without a single additional visitor.

Correct orders and predictable deliveries

Validating address and phone inside the form prevents wrong waybills and returned parcels, errors that cost double shipping and a lost customer each time.

Trust built exactly where the money changes hands

Transparent costs, familiar payment methods and a visibly secure connection are the signals that persuade a customer to enter card details.

Frequently asked questions

One-step or multi-step checkout — which is better?

Neither wins automatically. A single short screen works excellently for simple baskets, while separate steps for delivery, shipping and payment bring order to complex purchases and let you measure exactly where people drop out. The right decision comes from testing on your own customers rather than from general recipes.

Should I require customers to create an account at checkout?

No. Mandatory account creation is among the top three reasons for abandonment at completion. The standard solution is guest ordering with the option to save an account afterwards in one click, once the customer has nothing left to lose.

Which payment methods should I offer in the Romanian market?

The competitive minimum is card payment through a processor and cash on delivery, which a substantial share of Romanian buyers still expect, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay or instalment payment depending on your audience. A missing preferred method drives abandonment just as strongly as excessive shipping costs.
