IT Glossary
What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from another website to yours — read by Google as a vote of confidence that contributes to your authority and your positions in search.
On the web, a link from someone else's site to yours works like a public recommendation: that publication or company is effectively vouching for your content in front of its own readers, and in front of Google. This is the backlink, and search engines treat it as a vote — pages that many credible sites point to rise in the results. The nuance that changes everything is quality. One link from a respected publication in your sector outweighs dozens from obscure directories, and links bought in bulk from dubious sources attract penalties rather than positions. For your company, backlinks explain why two competitors with equally good websites can sit in completely different places in the rankings: one is cited by the press, by suppliers and by niche blogs, and the other is not. They are earned slowly, through content worth citing and through real relationships, which is exactly why they are so difficult for a competitor to copy.

Why it matters for your business
Authority that lifts the whole site
Links from credible sources raise Google's confidence in the entire domain, which benefits every page rather than only the one being linked to.
A competitive edge that resists copying
Content can be imitated in a week; a link profile built over years from real relationships and genuine citations cannot — it is the moat around your rankings.
Direct traffic from relevant sources
Beyond search, a link inside an article your audience actually reads brings visitors who already trust the recommendation and already have the problem you solve.
Frequently asked questions
How do I earn quality backlinks for a company website?
The routes that keep working: content worth citing, such as studies, guides and data from your own sector; presence in trade media through expert commentary; genuine partnerships with suppliers and professional associations; and correct listings in the directories that matter in your field. The common denominator is that the link exists because it deserves to.
Are purchased backlinks dangerous?
Link schemes breach Google's guidelines and the risk is real: devaluation of the links or, in cases of abuse, manual actions that collapse traffic. Cheap packages promising hundreds of backlinks deliver exactly the toxic profile the algorithms detect most easily. That budget produces more placed in content that attracts links on its own.
How do I see which backlinks my site has?
Free, in Search Console under Links, which lists the sites pointing at you and the pages they target. Tools such as Ahrefs or Semrush add quality analysis and competitor comparison, so you can see exactly where the competitors ahead of you get their links — a ready-made list of opportunities.
