What is an algorithm?
A precise recipe of steps that a computer follows to solve a problem — from sorting invoices to recommending products.
When your invoicing software works out the VAT, when a bank decides in seconds whether to approve a loan, and when an online shop tells you that customers also bought something else, algorithms are running underneath. An algorithm is a set of precise, step-by-step instructions that a computer executes identically every single time. Any kitchen recipe is an algorithm; the difference is that a computer never improvises and never forgives ambiguity, which is why turning business rules into algorithms always exposes the exceptions a company used to handle case by case, informally, in someone's head. For an owner the word matters in two situations. When you automate a process, you must be able to describe its rules without saying it depends. And when a supplier talks about their intelligent algorithm, the right question is which rules it actually applies and to which data — the algorithm is only the recipe, and the quality of the ingredients still decides the meal.

What is the difference between an algorithm and a program?
The algorithm is the abstract recipe — the logical steps. The program is that recipe written out in a language a computer can execute. The same algorithm can be implemented in dozens of different programming languages without changing at all.
What do people mean when they say a platform's algorithm is working against them?
Large platforms decide algorithmically which products and posts get seen. If their rules change, your visibility changes overnight through no fault of yours — which is the strongest commercial argument for owning your own channels: your site, your mailing list, your repeat customers.
Are artificial intelligence algorithms also just recipes of steps?
Fundamentally yes, with one important difference: the rules are no longer written by a person but inferred statistically from training data. That is why their outputs are probabilistic and must be verified, rather than trusted the way you trust a VAT calculation.
